Education
It was a chance visit by Cath Webster, whose husband Ian is a member of the Northern Lighthouse Board, which led to the Eilean Bàn education project. Cath is a primary school teacher in Edinburgh and was so enthused by a visit that she offered to produce an Education Pack for us.
The Trust believe that education plays an important part within the Project and had already considered encouraging school children to become involved in nature conservation by using Eilean Bàn as an example. Cath is helping us to achieve this by submitting her education pack to Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), who have contributed towards its production. The pack can be used in the classroom or on the island, with exciting yet highly educational, work sheets.
In addition to developing the Education Pack, School visits to the island are actively encouraged. We have already had a number of visits from primary schools from within Skye and Lochalsh. As well as encouraging visits to Eilean Bàn, we have produced a virtual island that includes many questions about the island. Children answer the questions using a resource box. This virtual island can be taken outside of the Visitor Centre if required, for School visits.
If you wish to know any more details about what the Trust can provide, or wish to arrange a visit to your School by a member of the Trust, please contact us.
As well as primary and secondary education the Trust offers the opportunity
for people wishing to undertake work placement as part of their College or University course. Student
Fiona Tough for example, completed a Habitat Survey.
Fiona, who was studying Conservation & Countryside Recreation at Elmwood College in Fife,
made the survey when she came to stay with us as a volunteer during the Easter holidays.
